IQALUIT, Nunavut, January 15th 2016: The Chairperson of the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board (NWMB), Mr. Ben Kovic, has decided to resign from his position with the NWMB, effective January 15th 2016. In tendering his resignation, Mr. Kovic stated that, “It has been an honour to serve a total of more than twelve years as the Board Chairperson [1994-2004 and 2013-2016]. I will always be proud of my association with this tribunal that has accomplished so very much since the signing of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement in 1993.”

Mr. Kovic has decided to accept an appointment to the board of the Baffin Fisheries Coalition, where he plans to assist in the further development of Nunavut’s commercial marine fisheries.

Under Mr. Kovic’s leadership, the NWMB has developed into a highly respected co-management tribunal, working with both Inuit and Government to ensure the conservation of Nunavut wildlife through the application of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and scientific knowledge.

On behalf of the NWMB, the Executive Director, Jason Akearok, thanked Mr. Kovic for his consistent dedication and years of service on behalf of Nunavut wildlife and harvesters, and wished him much success in his future endeavors.

The NWMB members will promptly select an Acting Chairperson, and will soon initiate the process leading to the appointment by the Governor in Council of a permanent NWMB Chairperson.
