Resolution 97-096
Resolved that the NWMB support the Department of Resources, Wildlife and Economic Development’s proposal to mount a “rescue and restocking” program for Peary caribou in the High Arctic subject to the following understandings and conditions:

   - That the NWMB will not entertain any subsequent invitation to provide funding for the capture and relocation operation, nor to cover any future maintenance costs relating to this project.
   - That the Calgary Zoo and the Department of Resources, Wildlife and Economic Development will develop a “Maintenance Plan” for the caribou for the duration of the animals’ stay at the zoo.
   - That any plans to restock the animals in their native habitat in future years will be contingent on NWMB approval, as per Article 5.2.34(d)(i) of the NLCA.
   - That surveys of the Peary caribou will be conducted on the High Arctic Islands in the 1997/98 fiscal year to establish a population estimate.
   - That steps will be taken, in consultation with the Resolute Bay HTA, to stop all hunting of Peary caribou on Bathurst Island.

Resolved that the NWMB provide a donation of $2,000 to the Etudes Inuit Studies of Montreal to assist with publication of the book Sinews of Survival: The Living Legacy of Inuit Clothing written by Betty Kobayashi Issenman.

Resolved that the “Strategic Plan for the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board” prepared by consultant Peter J. Usher be accepted as presented, with noted editorial corrections.
