NOTICE OF NUNAVUT WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT BOARD

PUBLIC HEARING

Notice is provided on June 28th 2013 that the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board (NWMB or Board) will be conducting a public hearing to consider the proposed modifications to the current Total Allowable Harvest for the Foxe Basin Polar Bear subpopulation in the Nunavut Settlement Area.

Issue to be considered at the hearing:

The issue under consideration for the public hearing will be the Total Allowable Harvest for the Foxe Basin Polar Bear subpopulation in the Nunavut Settlement Area.

The filing of submissions:

The Qikiqtaaluk Wildlife Board (QWB) has filed, in Inuktitut and English, a Proposal for NWMB decision with the NWMB to consider proposed modifications to the current level of Total Allowable Harvest for the Foxe Basin Polar Bear subpopulation in the Nunavut Settlement Area. The QWBs Proposal and additional documents relevant to the hearing are available for download from the NWMB’s website (www.nwmb.com), or by contacting the NWMB at the coordinates set out at the end of this notice.

The hearing is scheduled to take place at the Frobisher Inn (Kojesse Room) in Iqaluit, Nunavut from September 10-11, 2013 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on each day. In addition the NWMB may also hold evening sessions from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The deadline for submissions to the public hearing is August 2nd, 2013. The NWMB will make publicly available all of the written materials filed with it, subject to relevant confidentiality or privacy concerns.

The NWMB shall meet at least twice per year and may meet as often as it deems fit (NLCA 5.2.14).

Generally, the NWMB holds quarterly in-person meetings during the second week of June, September, December and March; unless circumstances require that it meets at another time. These are commonly referred to as Regular Meetings.  Additional meetings may be scheduled as required.

As an institution of public government, the NWMB is committed to an overall policy of openness and transparency, and to conducting as much of its wildlife management business as possible on the public record.  Accordingly, all Board meetings – except in camera and internal in camera meetings - are open to the public.

The NWMB generally provides written notice of a pending quarterly meeting at least sixty (60) days before the scheduled first day of the meeting. Notice is distributed to relevant government departments, Inuit Organizations, and non-government organizations, and is posted on the NWMB website. The notice includes a request for agenda items.
